What do you need for your first time at a gun range?
A photo ID, eye and ear protection, and a willingness to listen to the range officer. Many ranges rent firearms and sell ammo and protection on site, so call ahead and ask.
Arrive early for the safety brief. Tell the staff it is your first time. Good ranges want new shooters and will help.
What are the basic range rules?
Every range posts its own rules, and the range officer has the final word. Almost all of them start from the same four fundamentals.
Rule
---
Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
Never point the muzzle at anything you are not willing to destroy.
Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you are ready to fire.
Know your target and what is beyond it.
On top of those: case and uncase only at the firing line or where the range tells you, and stop immediately on a cease fire call.
How do you keep a range bag organized?
Give small things a hard home. Soft range bags turn into a pile of loose rounds, dead batteries, and target pasters stuck to everything.
A small waterproof case inside the bag holds ammo, magazines, and tools in foam you pluck to fit. Optics and electronics go in a padded case of their own.

What do I need in a range bag?
Eye and ear protection, your cased firearm, ammunition and spare magazines, targets with tape or a stapler, a multitool, a small cleaning kit, a first aid kit with a tourniquet, water, and weather gear.
What should I bring to the shooting range for the first time?
A photo ID and eye and ear protection. Many ranges rent guns and sell ammo on site, so call ahead. Arrive early for the safety brief and tell the staff it is your first visit.
Do I need double ear protection at an indoor range?
Many shooters wear foam plugs under muffs indoors, where the noise is louder and bounces off walls. It is a good habit, especially around rifles and compensated pistols.
How do I organize ammo in a range bag?
Keep boxed ammo and spare magazines in a small hard case with pluckable foam inside the bag. It stops loose rounds from spilling and keeps ammo dry.
