Deer Camp Checklist: Everything to Pack (Coffee Included)

Short answerA deer camp checklist covers five things: your license and tags, clothing and blaze orange, the weapon and ammunition you are hunting with, field dressing and meat care, and camp itself. That last one means shelter, light, water, food, a first aid kit, and coffee. Keep the gear that cannot get wet, like tags, optics, and electronics, in a waterproof case.
Opening morning starts at 0400 in the dark. You are cold, your boots are wet from the walk in, and somebody forgot the coffee. Deer camp is won or lost the night before, at the tailgate, with a checklist.

What do you need for deer camp?

Split it into what goes in the woods with you and what stays at camp. Most forgotten items are camp items, because everyone packs the rifle and nobody packs the can opener.

Category Pack it
Paperwork Hunting license, tags, landowner permission if needed, a pen or zip ties for the tag
Clothing Base layers, insulated layers, rain shell, blaze orange where your state requires it, extra socks, gloves, hat
In the woods Rifle or bow, ammunition or arrows, binoculars, rangefinder, knife, headlamp, hand warmers, water, snacks
Field dressing Gloves, game bags, drag rope, zip bags for the heart and liver, paper towels
Camp Shelter, sleeping bag rated for the cold, stove and fuel, lantern, cooler, water jugs, first aid kit, trash bags
Morale Coffee, a way to brew it, and something hot for the stand

What gear should go in a waterproof case at deer camp?

Anything that stops working when wet or gets ruined by a hard knock. That means optics, the rangefinder, batteries, your phone, the license and tags, and the first aid kit.

Truck beds, tent floors, and ATV racks are where gear goes to get soaked and crushed. A hard case with a seal keeps it dry and in one place, so you are not digging for tags in the dark.

How do you make coffee at deer camp?

Boil water on the camp stove and pick your method. Cowboy coffee in a pot works and has fed deer camps for a hundred years. An AeroPress makes a cleaner cup in about two minutes with no grounds in your teeth.

Brew it before you walk in and pour it into an insulated tumbler. A hot cup in the stand at first light is worth the extra five minutes.

What coffee should you bring to deer camp?

Something strong for 0400. Buy it ground so there is no grinder to pack.

Questions people actually ask

What should I bring to deer camp?

License and tags, layered clothing with blaze orange where required, your rifle or bow and ammunition, optics, a knife, field dressing gear, a headlamp, a first aid kit, shelter and a cold-rated sleeping bag, a stove, food, water, and coffee.

What do people forget at deer camp?

Camp items, not hunting items. Extra socks, the can opener, lantern fuel, trash bags, the tag pen, and a way to make coffee are the classics.

How do you keep gear dry at deer camp?

Keep optics, electronics, batteries, paperwork, and first aid in a waterproof hard case. Soft bags soak through in a wet truck bed or on a tent floor. An IP67 case keeps them sealed.

What is the best coffee for hunting?

Something strong you can brew fast. A high caffeine coffee like MOAB gets you moving at 0400, brewed in an AeroPress or as cowboy coffee and carried into the stand in an insulated tumbler.

Do I need blaze orange for deer hunting?

Most states require it for firearms deer season, but the amount and the seasons vary. Check your state wildlife agency's regulations before opening day.

Deer camp runs the same way a good operation does: the work gets done the night before, so the morning just happens. ARC is a small roaster in Charlottesville run by a twenty year Army logistics officer. We cannot help you find the buck. We can make sure the coffee is there when you walk out.
