How to use Navy Coffee in your Baking and Cooking Recipes

A cup of coffee on a bed of roasted whole coffee beans.

Hello again, this is Brian, your coffee aficionado and blogger. In this article, I’m going to show you how to use navy coffee in your baking and cooking recipes. Navy coffee is a term that refers to the strong and bitter brew that was traditionally prepared on naval ships. It is made with a high ratio of coffee grounds to water, and sometimes a pinch of salt is added to reduce the bitterness. Navy coffee has a high caffeine content and a distinctive flavor that some people love and others hate. But did you know that you can also use navy coffee as an ingredient in your dishes? It can add depth, richness, and complexity to your flavors. It can also balance out sweetness, acidity, and spiciness. Here are some of the recipes that I think are perfect for using navy coffee:

  • Navy Coffee Brownies: These brownies are moist, fudgy, and decadent. They have a hint of saltiness from the navy coffee, which complements the chocolate perfectly. They’re easy to make and will satisfy your sweet tooth.
  • Navy Coffee Chili: This chili is hearty, spicy, and satisfying. It has a robust flavor from the navy coffee, which adds a nice bitterness and depth. It’s loaded with beans, beef, tomatoes, and spices. You can serve it with cornbread, cheese, sour cream, and cilantro. .
  • Navy Coffee Ice Cream: This ice cream is creamy, smooth, and refreshing. It has a strong navy coffee flavor, which is balanced by the sweetness of the condensed milk. It’s a no-churn ice cream, which means you don’t need an ice cream maker to make it. You can enjoy it on its own or with some chocolate sauce or whipped cream.
  • Navy Coffee Rubbed Steak: This steak is tender, juicy, and flavorful. It has a crust of navy coffee grounds, brown sugar, salt, pepper, and garlic powder, which gives it a nice char and caramelization. It’s easy to prepare and cook on a grill or a skillet. You can serve it with some roasted potatoes or salad.
  • Navy Coffee Cake: This cake is moist, fluffy, and delicious. It has a layer of navy coffee infused batter, topped with a crunchy streusel of brown sugar, butter, flour, and cinnamon. It’s perfect for breakfast or brunch, or as a snack with some more navy coffee.

But before you try any of these recipes, you need to know how to make navy coffee first. There are different methods and opinions on how to make navy coffee, but here is one way that I found works well:

  • Use an economy-brand coffee that has a light to medium roast. You don’t need fancy beans for this brew.
  • Grind your beans into a coarse powder using a coffee grinder or a mortar and pestle.
  • Use a ratio of 1/3 to 1/2 cup of ground coffee per 6 oz of water.
  • Bring water to a rapid boil in a kettle.
  • Place the grounds directly into a French press or pot.
  • Pour the hot water over the grounds, stirring briefly.
  • Allow to steep for 4-5 minutes, without pressing or filtering.
  • Pour the coffee into heavy ceramic mugs.
  • Add a pinch of salt to each cup if you like.

There you have it: navy coffee in all its glory.

Now that you know how to make navy coffee, you can use it in your recipes or drink it as it is. But be careful: this brew is not for the faint of heart. It has a lot of caffeine and a lot of flavor.
