Shop Spectre →Can an AeroPress make real espresso?
Not technically. Real espresso is brewed at around nine bars of pressure, and hand pressing an AeroPress makes only a fraction of that. You will not get the thick crema a machine produces.
What you get is a short, concentrated shot with a lot of body. Under milk or water, most people cannot tell the difference, and it costs a fraction of a machine.
How do you make an AeroPress espresso shot?
More coffee, less water, finer grind. Here is the recipe.
| Step | AeroPress espresso-style shot |
|---|---|
| 1 | Rinse a paper filter in the cap. Set the press on a sturdy mug or small glass. |
| 2 | Add 18 grams of dark roast, ground fine, a little finer than table salt. |
| 3 | Pour about 70 grams of water around 185°F to 195°F. |
| 4 | Stir for 10 seconds and steep for 30 to 45 seconds. |
| 5 | Press firmly and steadily for about 20 seconds. Stop at the hiss. |
If you want to push it further, some people use two paper filters stacked in the cap. It adds a little resistance and makes the shot slightly more concentrated.
How do you make a latte with an AeroPress?
Pull the shot above, then add about 150 grams of hot, frothed milk. That is a latte.
No frother? Fill a jar a third of the way with milk, shake it hard with the lid on for 30 seconds, then take the lid off and microwave it for 30 seconds. The foam rises to the top. Pour the milk into the shot and spoon the foam over it.
How do you make an Americano with an AeroPress?
Pull the shot, then add 120 to 180 grams of hot water. Start with less and add more until it tastes right to you.
An Americano made this way is smoother than the same coffee brewed long, because the short brew leaves more of the bitterness behind.
| Drink | Shot | Add |
|---|---|---|
| Espresso-style shot | 18 g coffee, 70 g water | Nothing |
| Americano | 18 g coffee, 70 g water | 120 to 180 g hot water |
| Latte | 18 g coffee, 70 g water | About 150 g hot frothed milk |
| Iced latte | 18 g coffee, 70 g water | A glass of ice and about 150 g cold milk |

Does an AeroPress make real espresso?
No. Real espresso needs around nine bars of pressure, and an AeroPress makes a fraction of that. It does make a concentrated espresso-style shot that works well for lattes and Americanos.
How much coffee do you use for AeroPress espresso?
About 18 grams of finely ground dark roast to 70 grams of water. Steep 30 to 45 seconds and press firmly for about 20 seconds.
Can you make a latte with an AeroPress?
Yes. Pull an espresso-style shot and add about 150 grams of hot frothed milk. A jar shaken for 30 seconds and microwaved for 30 seconds makes foam without a frother.
What grind should I use for AeroPress espresso?
Fine, slightly finer than table salt. Too fine and the press gets very hard to push. Too coarse and the shot comes out thin.
What is the best coffee for AeroPress espresso?
A dark roast bought whole bean and ground right before brewing. Spectre is our espresso roast, and 15W40 is our darkest if you want a heavier shot under milk.
