Can old coffee make you sick?
Dry coffee almost never does. The exceptions are moisture and dairy.
- Mold. If beans or grounds got wet, smell musty, or show fuzzy spots, throw them out.
- Coffee with milk or creamer that sat out more than about two hours. The dairy is the problem, not the coffee.
- Brewed coffee that has been in the fridge for over a week or smells sour.
- A K-Cup that is puffed, torn, or wet.
If none of those apply, expired coffee is safe. It just will not taste like much.
Does expired coffee lose caffeine?
Not in any way you would notice. Caffeine is very stable. What fades is aroma and flavor, which is why old coffee tastes weak even though it hits the same.

- Smell it. Fresh coffee smells strong the second you open the bag. Stale coffee smells faint, dusty, or like nothing.
- Look at it. Dull, dry beans with no oils or no aroma are past their prime. Very dark roasts can look oily and still be stale, so smell wins.
- Taste it. Flat, papery, hollow, and sour without any sweetness.
